The team developed OpenBTS, an open-source, software-based cellphone network. Not only does it cost one-tenth as much as traditional networks, but carriers could charge callers about $2 per month and still make a profit. To do that, OpenBTS has stripped some of the opacity from cellphone service, turning it into a do-it-yourself project. Now, anyone with some technical chops, a Radio Shack nearby, and $4,500 can make a network that works with a standard GSM cellphone. SLUMS: The problem « LEBBEUS WOODS – People with steady jobs and incomes, who can save some money, buy enough food and clothing to last a while; who can plan for the future; all too often coast along without thinking very much or having to fall back on their resourcefulness. But there is no coasting for the slum dweller. Everything is now, today, and each day is a new struggle for survival. The gains made yesterday were maybe enough, but they were consumed yesterday. Nothing carries over, except the needs. Slum dwellers share something with people caught in a war zone, where the infrastructure of society has been interrupted or destroyed. They have to scrounge and improvise, just to have the basics pf shelter, food, heat. To survive, they have to be inventive. But the people in the war zone can look forward to the end of war, the restoration of society and its services. The slum dwellers have no such prospect. For them the war, its brutalities and atmosphere of cruelty and indifference to human life, never ends.

We are thus facing the possibility of an enormous increase in environmental deterioration, just when we need to move strongly in the opposite direction.[...]Most of all, what is needed is a new politics and a new social movement, powerful and inclusive. The best hope for such a new political dynamic is a fusion of those concerned about environment, social justice, and political democracy into one progressive force.

Bright Green – Living Future 2010: James Howard Kunstler – Once we understand our psychological barriers to change, we can see our problems and respond intelligently with workable solutions. Kunstler made an interesting distinction between “solutions” and “intelligent response.” He thinks that most people who talk about ‘solutions’ are really saying “give us a bunch of solutions so we can continue living the same way we’re living” now. In contrast, he said, intelligent responses are solutions that respond to “the circumstances we face” and come from an understanding of the underlying psychology of problems and the reality or limits of what solutions can do. For example, in Kunstler’s view, electric cars are a ‘solution’ to the end of “happy motoring,” but also a waste of time and resources; an ‘intelligent response’ would be to plan and invest in “walkable communities that exist in meaningful relation to productive agriculture.”
